Don't Quit! Foundation

Don't Quit! Foundation is a non-profit organization serving the health and fitness needs of America's youth. Founded by Jake, the mission is to educate and motivate children in the area of physical fitness. The Foundation carries out its mission by establishing Don't Quit! Fitness Centers in inner city middle schools and high schools throughout the country.

The goal of the Foundation is to support and challenge adolescents to do their best and to learn to strive from their own personal strengths without giving in to weakness. Don't Quit! Fitness Centers enhance the school's environment with outstanding equipment and rebuild demoralized physical education staffs by giving them tools to teach. Don't Quit! Fitness Centers help to develop the self-esteem that so often eludes today's youth and leads them away from their personal power to succeed.

Don’t Quit! Fitness Centers provide state of the art equipment on the school site for maximum access by the students. Qualifying schools agree to own and maintain the fitness center and staff is committed to offering cardiovascular and weight training physical education classes during the school day. The fitness center is also open to all students before and after school hours.

A Growing Commitment

The Foundation has created Don’t Quit! Fitness Centers in 32 schools nationwide located in California, Washington, District of Columbia, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Maryland. We are currently developing new centers with many more to come!

The California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports

In November 2005, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger named Jake as Council Chairman of the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Jake joins forces with other sports celebrities and legends that have been assembled to shine a light on the remarkable things everyday Californians are doing to promote physical activity in their schools and communities.  Governor Schwarzenegger recognizes Jake as a worldwide icon in the fitness industry and realizes his energy and don't-quit attitude are in inspiration for all Californians.

The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports has three core initiatives:

  • The Governor's Challenge
The Governor's Challenge presented by General Mills encourages all Californians to be physically active 30-60 minutes a day at least 3 days a week. The Governor's Challenge seeks to establish early habits of physical activity in California 's youngest citizens and to encourage all Californians to be physically active for their health and well-being.
  • The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Awards
The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Awards presented by the Anthem Blue Cross Foundation shine a spotlight on individuals, organizations and events that employ innovation, inspiration and initiative to positively impact physical activity, fitness levels and the well being of California children and youth.
  • Activity Guide
The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports' Activity Guide is an on-line searchable database of sporting activities, youth organizations and parks throughout California that parents, health practitioners and other Californians can use to connect California children and youth with physically active opportunities in their communities.

In 2008, Jake and the Council helped motivate 150,000 students to accept the Govenor’s Challenge. This number compares to 70,000 California participants in 2007, and is nearly twice the amount of people that participated nationally in a similar effort led by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
